Moving Mid-Year: Will Your Kids Get Into the Catchment School?

by Alex Dunbar

You found the house, and part of the reason you picked it was the school down the street. Then someone mentions the school is full, and suddenly you're wondering whether your kids will be bused across the city in February.

Here's the honest answer for Surrey, Langley and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows: living in catchment gives your child a strong claim on that school, but in every one of these districts it isn't a guarantee when a school is at capacity. Mid-year is when that matters most, because the main request windows have already closed.

I'll walk you through how each district handles it, what you need to register and what I'd do before you write an offer. My wife is a teacher with the Surrey school board, so this one is close to home for me, but everything below comes from the districts' own published rules, checked on November 3, 2026.

The Short Version

Your catchment school is set by your home address, and every district has a school locator tool that tells you which one it is. You register at (or through) that school once you have proof of your new address. If the school is full, the district places your child at a nearby school instead. Out-of-catchment requests have set windows, mostly in the spring, so a mid-year move is mostly about getting into catchment, not choosing a different school.

What "Catchment" Actually Means

A catchment is the area a school serves. Your address falls inside one catchment for elementary and usually a different, larger one for secondary. In Surrey, the district says your catchment school is decided by where your address falls on its School Boundaries Map. Langley and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows work the same way.

Here's what you might not expect: catchment boundaries can shift, and in fast-growing areas the locator can lag behind. SD42 says outright that new development areas may show inaccurate results and to confirm with the school. If you're buying a brand-new home in Silver Valley, Willoughby or Clayton, call the school, don't just trust the map.

Surrey (School District 36)

Surrey Schools says anyone living in BC can enrol a child in the district, and registration is open online year-round. Every student starts by registering at their catchment school, and you find it with the district's School Locator.

The important part for a mid-year move is what happens when the school is full. Surrey says some schools may close registration because of high enrolment, and those students are registered at a neighbouring school in the district. For in-catchment students who can't be accommodated, the principal works with the Assistant Superintendent and nearby schools to find a placement.

On out-of-catchment requests, Surrey lists schools closed to out-of-catchment registration for 2026/27, other than siblings, with no out-of-catchment waitlist kept for them. Secondary out-of-catchment requests go on a waitlist once registration opens. Programs of choice, like French immersion and other specialty programs, run their own process and don't depend on where you live.

Surrey's Welcome Centre helps new families find a school and fill out forms, and it can help in many languages.

With 2 young kids of our own, this is the part of a move I'd want sorted before anything else.

Langley (School District 35)

Langley registers students online through MyEDBC. New families without a BC school-age child create a MyEDBC account first, and the district strongly recommends doing it on a desktop or laptop. You find your catchment school with the district's school locator, or call the school board office if you're unsure.

SD35 is clear that you have to upload all of your documents, even when the system doesn't prompt you for each one. That trips people up.

If you want a school other than your catchment school, Langley uses a cross-boundary request. You register at your catchment school first, get a cross-boundary form signed by the catchment principal, then submit it to the principal of the school you want. For the 2026-27 year, the process began on or after January 5, 2026, decisions generally aren't made before June 15, and a request can be accepted, denied or deferred up to September 15. The district says approval isn't guaranteed, and high-enrolment schools may take longer.

For a family moving to Willoughby mid-year, that means you register at your catchment school and treat a cross-boundary request as a long shot for this year. Willoughby has grown fast, so it's one of the places where calling the school before you buy pays off. For the school side of that decision, see my picks for the best elementary schools in Langley.

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows (School District 42)

SD42 does registration through its Parent Portal. You create an account, then submit a new student request. Once your child is assigned a school, you get an email with the placement and instructions to upload documents, and registration is complete only after the school approves them.

SD42 is the most direct about capacity. Its locator shows the designated school for your address, but the district says it can't guarantee every request, and space limits how many out-of-catchment students a school takes. Catchment students are placed first, then out-of-catchment siblings.

The 2026/27 early enrolment period for grades 1 to 7 and 9 to 12 ran from March 11 to July 27, 2026. A request after placement goes through the portal and depends on building space and staffing.

For Silver Valley families, the new-development warning applies. Confirm your catchment directly with the school.

What You'll Need to Register

Each district publishes its own list, and they don't match perfectly, so check the one for your district. In general you'll be asked for proof of your child's age, proof of your citizenship or immigration status, proof of guardianship with photo ID and proof of your BC address.

Proof of address is where a mid-year move gets awkward, because you may not have a BC driver's licence or a utility bill at the new place yet. SD42 asks for 2 catchment documents with at least one from its first category, which includes a purchase agreement, a rental or lease agreement, a mortgage document or a property assessment. Langley asks for 2 proof-of-residence documents from separate lists. Surrey's principals can use discretion with a combination of documents such as a purchase agreement and utility bills when you don't have government ID at the new address yet.

Your accepted offer and completion documents are useful here. Keep a copy handy for registration.

Mid-Year vs September: The Honest Trade-Off

Moving in September has one big advantage: the districts' choice and transfer windows line up with it. Moving in November or February means you're mostly taking the catchment school you're given, or a neighbouring school if it's full, and waiting for next year's window if you want something else.

The upside of a mid-year move is that you're not competing with every other family registering in late August. The downside is that schools that are already full stay full, and your child may start somewhere temporary.

If you've watched my school ranking videos, keep this in mind: a ranking tells you which school you'd want. It doesn't tell you whether it has room. That's a separate check, and it's one you do before you write an offer. If you want a starting point, here's my list of the best elementary schools in Surrey.

What I'd Do Before You Buy

Run the address through the district's school locator. Then call the school and ask 2 things: is it currently accepting new in-catchment registrations, and has anything changed with its boundary recently? If the answer is that it's full and redirecting, ask where students are being placed instead, and look at that school too.

If the school is the main reason you're buying in a neighbourhood, that phone call is worth more than any listing description. If the school is driving your search, my Neighbourhood Matchmaker quiz can help you find areas that fit the rest of your list too.

Who This Is Not For

If you're set on one specific school and your move date is flexible, a mid-year move isn't the way to get there. Time your move for the summer and get your request in during that district's spring window. And if you're looking at a program of choice like French immersion or a specialty academy, catchment isn't the deciding factor at all. Go straight to the district's program of choice page and work back from its deadlines, then look at neighbourhoods with a reasonable drive to that school. My neighbourhood compare tool makes that side-by-side a lot faster.

FAQ

Am I guaranteed a spot at my catchment school in BC?

Not when the school is at capacity. Surrey, Langley and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows all place in-catchment students first, but a full school can redirect new students to a nearby school.

Can I register my child for school before I move in?

Districts generally need proof of your new address. A purchase or rental agreement is accepted as one of the documents in SD42, and Surrey principals can accept a purchase agreement as part of a set of documents. Check your district's list.

How do I find my catchment school in Surrey, Langley or Maple Ridge?

Use the school locator tool on surreyschools.ca, sd35.bc.ca or sd42.ca. In newer neighbourhoods, confirm with the school directly, because the locator may lag behind new development.

What is a cross-boundary request in Langley?

It's Langley's process for asking to attend a school outside your catchment. You register at your catchment school first, then submit a form signed by its principal to the school you want. Approval isn't guaranteed.

When is the deadline for Langley cross-boundary requests?

For the 2026-27 year, the process began on or after January 5, 2026, decisions generally weren't made before June 15, and a request could be accepted, denied or deferred up to September 15. Approval isn't guaranteed.

What proof of address do I need to register in SD42?

2 catchment documents, with at least one from SD42's first category, which includes a purchase agreement, a rental or lease agreement, a mortgage document or a property assessment.
